Chapter 7
Summary
COSMOLOGY
The Universe is infinite. There is no outer border. Even if there were a border and a void beyond, that void would be part of the universe.
The Universe is eternal. It never began, and it will never end. It has no age. Many religions promote the idea that there was a beginning, but at the same time they speak of an external god existing before the beginning. Religions are not the only ones to promote the idea that the universe has a birthday. Many scientists claim it is 13 billion years old, though they continually revise this age upward. And when questioned about the "beginning out of nothing," they conjure up a primordial mass that pre-existed the big birthday.
There are two types of energy: the inanimate physical energy (light, heat, etc.) and the animate living energy (mind, consciousness, chi). The physical energy tends to dissipate, to contract. The living energy tends to increase (grow, expand). Both energies are eternal. Energy is neither created nor destroyed. Physical inanimate energy never began, and will never cease to exist. So too, living animate energy never began and will never cease to exist. Living things are a combination of the animate and the inanimate.
AFTERLIFE
There is an afterlife, the next stage in our existence, in which we will still exist.
We are not our bodies. We are eternal entities that have bodies for the purpose of our present phase of existence here on Earth. Our ancestors continue to exist in the next stage of their eternal existence. Our cemeteries are filled with nothing more than the discarded vehicles used for this human phase of existence.
CHANCE AND DESTINY
There is both order and randomness in the universe. Many things happen for no reason; many other things happen for a reason.
The basic randomness of the universe is found even in the supposedly exact sciences such as math and physics. If we make a hundred measurements of some physical quantity, we will not obtain a hundred equal results. In fact we will obtain a hundred slightly different results. The results of any number of observations of anything at all will never produce a smooth straight line on a graph. Instead we will get a "jagged" approximation of a line. And any objection that the different results are due to imperfections in the exactness of our measurements, or our measuring devices, only further verifies the randomness of all things—our measurements and devices are themselves phenomena of the randomly varying universe.
And when it comes to the phenomena of mind, random variations tend toward even greater difference. The creation of mental random is not bounded like dice throws. We can simply imagine dice with a thousand sides and imagine the results. We can draw numbers out of an imaginary bag of a thousand numbers and suddenly add color or size to further expand the random variation.
Random events can alter one's destiny, for example, newly-weds killed in car crash on way to their honeymoon. Random events can also result in events of historical importance, e.g., surprise war victories. Or individual happiness or misery.
We must learn to recognize that which is random in life. And that which is not.

"Chance variations form the matrix out of which the purposive psychic process arises. Not purpose, but chance is at the heart of mental life."—Dr. Boris Sidis, 1914 |
EDUCATION
We are what we know. We are the sum total of our knowledge.
We are driven to learn as much as to eat.
We take our knowledge to the afterlife.
Our knowledge determines our level of evolution. We will enter the afterlife at whatever level we have reached.
The furtherance of one’s cosmic evolution is a fundamental principle of education in this life or the next.
We must sample many paths, teachers, systems, in order to gain knowledge and movement along the path of cosmic evolution. Combine the orthodox with the unusual.
The higher the mental system, the more flexible and variable it is. Flexible minds survive best. 'Survival of the most adaptable' is actually what Darwin meant by "survival of the fittest."
The true teacher has no followers. The true teacher tries to create new teachers who will be more knowledgeable than the teacher. One should neither follow a guru nor be a guru with followers. It is true that another individual’s guru is a source of knowledge, and such knowledge should be acquired; but if one stays too long on an other’s path, one will lose one's way.
"The hardest path to find is under foot."—Native American Saying
One should not confuse a teacher’s power with the power of knowledge itself. There is a huge difference between the power of knowledge or an idea and the power of the teacher who passes it along ('teaches' it).
One can enroll, temporarily, in an educational corporation, e. g., college, university, but one should; "Take the knowledge and run. It's not the college, it's the knowledge."
When a quantitative increase in the number of individuals with sufficient information reaches a critical point, the result is a qualitative leap for all humanity into a new stage. (The Internet is at the heart of this process at this time.)
Psychic storms and unpredictable obstacles are part of life. Find pleasure in mastering them. Adversity is a gift when replied to in such a way as to further one's cosmic evolution.
In this new era, learning through pain is being replaced by learning through joy.
"One ought, each day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture, and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words (Johann Von Goethe, 1796).
One should read a quotation each day. History’s great quotation makers are a source of wisdom because of their ability to synthesize much knowledge in few words.
MORALITY
Anonymous contribution is the highest form of serving others.
We all must seek to create service that liberates rather than controls, that celebrates the success of others. "It is always with the best intentions that the worst work is done (Oscar Wilde, 1891)."
POLITICS
The individual is the ultimate product of evolution. Every raindrop, every flower, every thought, and every atom is an individuality different from every other in some way.
Every individual is a citizen of the universe. The individual is the most important political and economic entity. Governments exist only at the consent of individuals.
Liberty and property for all.
One should fight the worst injustices, and the nearest injustices. Great injustices rest upon the shoulders of the many small ones.
Be neither follower nor leader. "As I would not be any man's slave, so too would I not be his master."—Abraham Lincoln
Elections should be by lottery. We would have no worse than the present system, and by chance great ones would become leaders more often than in the present systems.
The greater a government's or religion's use of pageantry, the greater its falsity.
Our living spaces should further our evolution. Houses must be at a healthy distance from on another.
BUSINESS
Be a spiritual or enlightened businessman who is part of an enlightened corporation. This one of the concepts of Utopian Capitalism.
In most corporations those most addicted to power, wealth, and work rise to the top.
Individual responsibility is stifled in pyramid structures (corporations, religions, universities) which transform it into a burden for lower level employees.
Beyond the pyramid: A job is for gaining the money to provide for personal growth.
The purpose of work is play. "The first principle of all action is leisure." —Aristotle, Politics.
